About

IMG_1931Hi, welcome! I’m Brookie. I make quilted things, interview people, and write, often while thinking about the quilt. I’m working through a PhD in philosophy, aesthetics, and art theory, which means I read— a lot. A few excerpts and formative ideas as applied to the quilt and textiles make their way here.

My research explores the subject-object relationship in the era of strange phenomenologies and new materialisms, how conservators imagine saving objects like the quilt, and how art theory has been and can be applied to objects of antiquity and utilitarian craft. In the studio, I’m experimenting with new work that brings the hand-drafted aesthetic quirk of nineteenth century quilts into a contemporary practice. I’ve restored more than 50 significant antique quilts and take commissions for repair and restoration of antique quilts. My 14′ Gammill can be rented by machine quilters with experience in the Dayton, Ohio area.

In my past lives I’ve been a journalist for a community weekly, helped build a ‘community voices’ program at a public radio station, and coordinated public programs for a nature preserve. Currently an Instructor at Antioch College, I teach phenomenology and philosophies of work, and coach faculty and students across a network of small colleges to do community-based research through oral history and digital storytelling.
